Michigan Railroad Commissioner 1884

The Toledo, Ann Arbor and Grand trunk Railway Company having abandoned that portion of its original route between South Lyon and Pontiac, and sold its partially constructed road bed to the Michigan Air Line Company, has projected an extension of its line northwestwardly in the direction of Lake Michigan via St. Louis in Gratiot county. The section of this extension lying between Owosso and St. Louis has been constructed the past year under the designation of the Toledo, Ann Arbor and North Michigan Railroad, but the corporation of the same name constructing it has consolidated with the Toledo, Ann Arbor and Grand Trunk retaining its own corporate title.

The Toledo, Ann Arbor & North Michigan is also preparing to complete its road by extension from Cadillac to Frankfort on Lake Michigan, with a branch to Manistee.

Michigan Railroad Commissioner 1889

Toledo, Ann Arbor & North Michigan

Commenced the inspection of this line April 17th, and went over the entire line from Toledo to Cadillac, reaching, the latter point a little afternoon of the 18th. The bridges were found in safe condition. Many new ties were needed which have since been put in. The fences on the the most part between the State line and Ann Arbor are old and very poor and most of them should be rebuild. Some of the fence has been renewed since then, and more is seriously needed. With the exception of the branch between Leland and South Lyon, this road is in fair business shape and the traveling public has nothing to fear or complain of. This –the South Lyon—branch has been practically abandoned on account of a change in the route of the main line. The fences are no longer of use to turn stock, the ties are decayed, and the track is scrap rail. It is operated only to nominally comply with the requirements of the statue. Complaints are numerous, and considerable effort has been made to have the company either repair and operate or go to the courts and ask for an order to abandon. Up to date they have declined to do either. Steps are now being taken to compel the company to either abandon the section in question or repair it in proper manner. As it now is, it is if no use to its owners nor anyone else, and is a nuisance to those owning land along the line.

The new portion of this line between Cadillac and Copemish was inspected November 20th and found in excellent condition and very substantially built. The bridge and trestle over the Manistee river are deserving of special mention and a exceptionally well built.
